Look for the speaker icon in the menu bar, near the clock. AudioPreset has no Dock icon. If your menu bar is full, macOS can hide icons behind the camera notch. Remove menu bar icons you do not need to make room.

Choose your devices in System Settings or with the Input Device and Output Device submenus. Then click the speaker icon and choose Capture Current as Preset. To edit a Preset later, choose Manage Presets.

AudioPreset changes the macOS default devices. An app that uses a fixed device ignores the default. In that app’s audio settings, choose the option that follows the system, often called “System Default” or “Same as System”.

The device was not connected when you applied the Preset. Connect it and apply the Preset again. For a Bluetooth device, AudioPreset tries to connect it first. “Connect failed” or “timed out” means macOS could not reach the device: turn it on, check that it is paired in System Settings under Bluetooth, and try again. “No access” means AudioPreset may not use Bluetooth: turn it on in System Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Bluetooth.

Something switched the device right after AudioPreset set it, for example macOS moving audio to headphones that just connected. AudioPreset sets the device again up to two times, then stops and tells you. Wait until your devices settle, then apply the Preset again.

System Output is the device for alerts and sound effects. When a Preset leaves it empty, it follows Output. Set it when you want calls on one device and alerts on another.

Only if you turn it on. Choose Manage Presets, open the General tab, and turn on the login option.

Click the speaker icon and choose Quit AudioPreset.
